programs at The Center for Contemporary Dance are conducted in
accordance with the National Standards for Dance Education by
mature, educated
professionals with more than 200 years of combined
industry experience. Additional Standards of
Education implemented by The Center also appear below.
THE NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR DANCE
EDUCATION
According
to The National Standards for Dance Education: What Every Young
American Should Know and Be Able to Do in Dance, Princeton Book
Co Pub (December 1994), ISBN 0871272008, a responsible dance program
should provide an education in:
1)
Identifying and
demonstrating movement elements and skills in performing
dance.
2)
Understanding
choreographic principles, processes and
structures.
3)
Understanding dance as
a way to create and communicate meaning.
4)
Applying and
demonstrating critical and creative thinking skills in
dance.
5)
Demonstrating and
understanding dance in various cultures and historical periods.
6)
Making connections
between dance and healthful living.
7)
Making connections
between dance and other disciplines.
ADDITIONAL STANDARDS OF
EDUCATION
l
Programs
include the Creative Movement
Academy for students 2-7 and the area's widest selection
of Adult
Education Classes for mature students of all levels, from
beginner to professional
l
Pre-professional students receive
additional training in Artistic Development, Production,
Composition, Arts Management, Dance History and Audition
Preparation
l
All
students receive consistent and detailed feedback, so they may
proactively address weaknesses and maximize
strengths
l
Educators attend
at least 3 workshops per year to enhance teaching methodologies and
gain up-to-date information in safe, efficient approaches to dance
education
l
Educators meet
once each week, to review student progress reports and case-studies
wherein approaches to education and problem-solving are
shared
l
Educators must
have a college degree in dance or commensurate industry experience
of at least 10 years
l
Competitions
and recitals are not part of programming, so that students may
remain focused on the more holistic goal of artistic and/or
professional development
l
Performance opportunities are offered in
the context of semester-end concert presentations and
apprenticeships in one of The Center’s professional
ensembles
l
Internships
are available for exceptional students who wish to more deeply
explore specific disciplines, including improvisation, composition
and partnering
